DISASTER RELIEF TEAM |
The Asbury Disaster Relief Mission Team was started in the Fall of 2004, by Janet Jackson. We currently have about 10 active
members, but would love to have a few more people join us, especially a few guys! The Katrina disaster created an acute
awareness that most of us are not prepared for disasters, or even small emergencies. Most of us take these things for
granted, but in the blink of an eye, you can lose your electricity, your water supply, and even your home from a fire, storm
or flood, etc. Being "PREPARED" is definitely the key to being able to SURVIVE in any emergency situation, so our main
purpose is to help inform and educate our church family about the importance of knowing what to do in the event of, and how
to "be prepared" for, different types of emergencies. We give out pamphlets, flyers, and freebies, and periodically offer
training in CPR, search and rescue, first response, etc.

Asbury's Disaster Relief Team is a member DEVOAD (Delaware Volunteers Organized to Aid in Disasters), which is a huge network
of people, churches, schools, hospitals, and organizations that work together in the event of a catastrophe. DEVOAD helps
find shelter and aid for victims who have lost their homes due to fire, flood, wind damage, etc. In the event of a dangerous
epidemic, chemical spill, terrorist attack, etc., DEVOAD would immediately contact its members to let them know how to handle
the situation in their area. We are very pleased that the Red Cross recently inspected our church and facilities and
approved it for use as a "safe haven" in the event of a local disaster or emergency.

The Disaster Relief Team depends on fund raisers and donations to help needy families in our church, provide Scholarships for
deserving students, and purchase emergency equipment, such as the AED machine (automatic electronic defibrillator).

The Disaster Relief Team strives to inform, educate, and create an awareness of the need for "being prepared" and keeping you
and your family safe. If you would like to do something to help others, please contact Janet Jackson via e-mail at
mommoms4angels@verizon.net, or contact the church office at 302-328-5649 and join our hard-working and fun-loving team.
(Remember, we need a few more guys on our team!) We meet the first Saturday of each month, except for July and August, at
9:00 a.m. in the nurse's office, and our meetings are usually over by 10:00. Being part of the Disaster Relief Team is a
fun, rewarding, and helpful way to serve our church and others.
